About Us
Our Story
Our story begins in 1968, when The 3 Acres was established by Derrick Truelove as a small and much-loved pub. Derrick’s son, Neil, joined the business in 1971, along with then-head chef, Brian Orme – and the well-known pair of pals worked together closely to grow our culinary reputation.
Today The 3 Acres is owned and managed by Neil’s son, Tom Truelove, and his wife, Lauren. We’re now a third generation, lovingly family-run business, renowned for our heritage approach to modern hospitality.

The finest Yorkshire fayre
Food is the beating heart of The 3 Acres. Himself an exceptional and accomplished chef, owner Tom combines his love of the finest local ingredients with an eye for creative culinary experiences to produce the very best dishes, working closely alongside head chef, Tom Davies.
Exciting and bold flavours create vibrant, seasonal menus featuring hearty-yet-refined dishes that sit alongside old favourites and renowned classics such The 3 Acres French Onion Soup and our much-loved 3 Acres Sunday Roast. Wherever and whenever possible, the ingredients we use in our cooking are sourced locally to ensure the very best produce translates to the freshest of flavours on your plate.
A Rich Heritage
Over the years, we’ve cooked for high-profile guests, including celebrity chefs such as Rick Stein, Marco Pierre White and Delia Smith, through to other familiar names including Stephen Fry, David Cameron and Sharon Osborne, to name but a few.
Tom says: “I’m extremely proud The 3 Acres has remained in our family since 1968. We’ve developed a rich heritage in delivering the very best dining experience featuring ingredients of exceptional provenance that are locally sourced wherever possible.”

A place to rest your head
Nestled close to the iconic Emley Moor mast in Shelley, West Yorkshire, The 3 Acres enjoys far-reaching views across the Pennines. These can be enjoyed from our 15 bedrooms, so when you’ve filled your belly with food and your heart with laughter, you can retire for the most sumptuous nights’ sleep.
Our bedrooms cocoon you with timeless interior schemes that echo the age of the building and emphasise the incredible moorland setting through colour and pattern, and blend antique furniture and period details perfectly alongside more modern design elements to create comfortable spaces, each with their individual style.
